Magnus Hagander dcb09b595f Support for collecting crash dumps on Windows
Add support for collecting "minidump" style crash dumps on
Windows, by setting up an exception handling filter. Crash
dumps will be generated in PGDATA/crashdumps if the directory
is created (the existance of the directory is used as on/off
switch for the generation of the dumps).

Bruce Momjian 6870843339 Add PGETC (for pg_service.conf) and PGLOCALE (for locale dir)

The patch also adds code to our client apps so we set the environment
variable directly based on our binary location, unless it is already
set. This will allow our applications to emit proper locale messages
that are generated in libpq.

Tom Lane 076a055acf Separate out bgwriter code into a logically separate module, rather
than being random pieces of other files. Give bgwriter responsibility
for all checkpoint activity (other than a post-recovery checkpoint);
so this child process absorbs the functionality of the former transient
checkpoint and shutdown subprocesses. While at it, create an actual
include file for postmaster.c, which for some reason never had its own
file before.

Tom Lane 1a321f26d8 Code review for EXEC_BACKEND changes. Reduce the number of #ifdefs by
about a third, make it work on non-Windows platforms again. (But perhaps
I broke the WIN32 code, since I have no way to test that.) Fold all the
paths that fork postmaster child processes to go through the single
routine SubPostmasterMain, which takes care of resurrecting the state that
would normally be inherited from the postmaster (including GUC variables).
Clean up some places where there's no particularly good reason for the
EXEC and non-EXEC cases to work differently. Take care of one or two
FIXMEs that remained in the code.

Bruce Momjian 31338352bd * Most changes are to fix warnings issued when compiling win32
* removed a few redundant defines
* get_user_name safe under win32
* rationalized pipe read EOF for win32 (UPDATED PATCH USED)
* changed all backend instances of sleep() to pg_usleep

    - except for the SLEEP_ON_ASSERT in assert.c, as it would exceed a
32-bit long [Note to patcher: If a SLEEP_ON_ASSERT of 2000 seconds is
acceptable, please replace with pg_usleep(2000000000L)]

I added a comment to that part of the code:

    /*
     * It would be nice to use pg_usleep() here, but only does 2000 sec
     * or 33 minutes, which seems too short.
     */
    sleep(1000000);

Bruce Momjian dea47eee06 Windows uses codepages rather than the environment, so we work around
that by querying the environment explicitly first for LC_COLLATE and
LC_CTYPE. We have to do this because initdb passes those values in the
environment. If there is nothing there we fall back on the codepage.

Tom Lane 780cba9880 Move responsibility for copying argv[] array into ps_status.c, where it
logically belongs. Arrange to update the _NSGetArgv() copy of the argv

just make this #ifdef __darwin__.)

Bruce Momjian e5e5a323ca Briefly,
* configure + Makefile changes
 * shared memory attaching in EXEC_BACKEND case (+ minor fix for apparent
cygwin bug under cygwin/EXEC_BACKEND case only)
 * PATH env var separator differences
 * missing win32 rand functions added
 * placeholder replacements for sync etc under port.h

To those who are really interested, and there are a few of you: the attached
patch + file will allow the source base to be compiled (and, for some
definition, "run") under MingW, with the following caveats (I wanted to
first properly fix all but the last of these, but y'all won't quit asking
for a patch :-):

        * child death: SIGCHLD not yet sent, so as a minimum, you'll need to
put in some sort of delay after StartupDatabase, and handle setting
StartupPID to 0 etc (ie. the stuff the reaper() signal function is supposed
to do)

        * dirmod.c: comment out the elog calls

        * dfmgr.c: some hackage required to substitute_libpath_macro

        * slru/xact.c: comment out the errno checking after the readdir
(fixed by next version of MingW)

Again, this is only if you *really* want to see postgres compile and start,
and is a nice leg-up for working on the other Win32 TODO list items. Just
don't expect too much else from it at this point...

Bruce Momjian 50491963cb Here's the latest win32 signals code, this time in the form of a patch
against the latest shapshot. It also includes the replacement of kill()
with pqkill() and sigsetmask() with pqsigsetmask().

Passes all tests fine on my linux machine once applied. Still doesn't
link completely on Win32 - there are a few things still required. But
much closer than before.

At Bruce's request, I'm goint to write up a README file about the method
of signals delivery chosen and why the others were rejected (basically a
summary of the mailinglist discussions). I'll finish that up once/if the
patch is accepted.

Bruce Momjian 843657b066 attached is take-2 of a patch which fixes a bug related
to the use of getpwuid when running in standalone mode.
this patch allocates some persistent storage (using
strdup) to store the username obtained with getpwuid
in src/backend/main/main.c. this is necessary because
later on, getpwuid is called again (in ValidateBinary).

the man pages for getpwuid on SCO OpenServer, FreeBSD,
and Darwin all have words to this effect (this is from
the SCO OpenServer man page):

  Note
  ====
  All information is contained in a static area, so it must
  be copied if it is to be saved. Otherwise, it may be
  overwritten on subsequent calls to these routines.

in particular, on my platform, the storage used to hold
the pw_name from the first call is overwritten such that
it looks like an empty username. this causes a problem
later on in SetSessionUserIdFromUserName.

i'd assume this isn't a problem on most platforms because
getpwuid is called with the same UID both times, and the
same thing ends up happening to that static storage each
time. however, that's not guaranteed, and is _not_ what
happens on my platform (at least :).

Peter Eisentraut f8ff1ee5aa Move DLSUFFIX, AROPT, and CFLAGS_SL settings from template to
Makefile.port, since they are of no use to configure and much of the
library magic happens in Makefile.port anyway.

Use __alpha, not __alpha__, since the former is universally available.
Remove -DNOFIXADE from the compile command line and put it in the port
include file.

Bruce Momjian 7ea8403c8a The beos port in the source tree doesn't even compile. and even
after that dynamic loading isn't working and shared memory handling is
broken.

        Attached with this message, there is a Zip file which contain :

        * beos.diff = patch file generated with difforig
        * beos = folder with beos support files which need to be moved in /
src/backend/port
        * expected = foler with three file for message and precision
difference in regression test
        * regression.diff = rule problem (need to kill the backend manualy)
        * dynloader = dynloader files (they are also in the pacth files,
but there is so much modification that I have join full files)

        Everything works except a problem in 'rules' Is there some problems
with rules in the current tree ? It used to works with last week tree.

Bruce Momjian 87c0e623ba New diff that now covers the entire tree. Applying this gets postgresql
working on the VERY latest version of BeOS. I'm sure there will be
alot of comments, but then if there weren't I'd be disappointed!

Thanks for your continuing efforts to get this into your tree.

Haven't bothered with the new files as they haven't changed.

BTW Peter, the compiler is "broken" about the bool define and so on.
I'm filing a bug report to try and get it addressed. Hopefully then we
can tidy up the code a bit.

I await the replies with interest :)

Peter Eisentraut 6dc249610a Code cleanup of user name and user id handling in the backend. The current
user is now defined in terms of the user id, the user name is only computed
upon request (for display purposes). This is kind of the opposite of the
previous state, which would maintain the user name and compute the user id
for permission checks.

Besides perhaps saving a few cycles (integer vs string), this now creates a
single point of attack for changing the user id during a connection, for
purposes of "setuid" functions, etc.
